Half a million people in Gaza are on the brink of famine while the rest are enduring emergency levels of hunger.
The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Alert shows that more than 500,000 people – nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population – are enduring famine-like conditions, while the remaining population is facing emergency levels of hunger.
Relentless conflict, the collapse of essential services and severe limitations on the delivery and distribution of humanitarian assistance have led to catastrophic conditions across the Gaza Strip.
Over 320,000 children – the entire population under 5 in the Gaza Strip – are at risk of acute malnutrition. Thousands are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, the deadliest form of undernutrition. Essential nutrition services have collapsed with infants lacking access to safe water, breastmilk substitutes and therapeutic feeding.
More than one in three people are now going days at a time without eating
A ceasefire is urgently needed. The amount of food delivered to date is a tiny fraction of what a population of over 2 million people need to survive.
WFP has the food, experienced teams on the ground and proven systems to respond at scale. WFP has over 170,000 metric tons of food in - or on its way to - the region, enough to feed the entire population of 2.1 million people for almost three months.

Food and cash assistance

Over 1,800 trucks have been dispatched to reach starving civilians inside Gaza, since border crossings reopened to aid on 21 May 2025. However, this is a tiny fraction of what a population of over 2 million people need to survive. Just to cover basic humanitarian food assistance needs, more than 62,000 metric tons is required every month. In the West Bank, WFP is providing monthly cash vouchers to more than 190,500 people.

Recovery

When conditions allow, WFP will transition to recovery-focused initiatives, including restoring markets, supporting livelihoods, rebuilding food systems, and expanding school meals, guided by ongoing assessments and partnerships.

Logistics

WFP has the logistics capacity, expertise and operational coverage to deliver assistance across Gaza and the West Bank. We are ready to send up to 30,000 metric tons of food each month into Gaza, including food parcels, wheat flour, commodities for hot meals, and nutrition support.
